Embedding Videos with WordPress

Multimedia has become an integral part of content creation for everyone. From audio, to Facebook Live, to professionally produced videos, everyone is adding more than text. While you probably don’t want to host your videos on your WordPress site (let the pros handle video hosting), embedding video in your WordPress posts and pages is something you’d like to do. You can see an example above. In this tutorial, you’re going to learn how to easily embed a video into the WordPress editor.

Creating the Post

First, go to your WordPress Dashboard, and create a new page or post. Give it a title so the Permalink generates correctly. You don’t have to worry about adding any written content (though you can if you want to).

Finding a Video

If you go to the WordPress Codex, you can see a list of all the embeddable videos and media. You can see that along with YouTube and Vimeo, there are tons of other services you can choose from. Embedding video isn’t your only option; there’s audio, like Spotify, social sites like Facebook, and even specific entertainment sites like College Humor. Your next step is to find a video (or other media) that you want to embed from any of the services listed. Here’s the one that’s used in the video above: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unY21SxgOk4. Feel free to use it if you can’t find one you’d like to use!

Embedding Video in WordPress

Once you have your link, go back to the page or post you created and paste that URL into the editor. The actual media you selected automatically replaced the URL. Now, click “Publish” then “View the Page.” You can see that the video is embedded directly into the page.

That’s really it! This is great WordPress functionality that makes is as easy as possible for embedding video and other media into your WordPress site, and there are countless uses for it, from creating your own media entertainment site, a home for your podcast, or even an online learning website 🙂
